SMART goal-setting is attributed to George T. Doran, a consultant and author of “There’s a S.M.A.R.T. Way to Write Management’s Goals and Objectives” (1981). In the paper, he offered SMART in the following way:  Specific – target a specific area for improvement.  Measurable – quantify or at least suggest an indicator of progress. Assignable – specify who will do it.  Realistic – state what results can realistically be achieved, given available resources.  Time-related – specify when the result(s) can be achieved.  Doran went on to provide that SMART can and will have many meanings that may lead to the creation of goals that are believed to be effective and meaningful. The goal of his paper was to advance goal-setting in a manner that incorporated the SMART criteria as a guideline to more predictive and rigid goal-setting. I don’t know whether you have ever seen a map of a person’s mind. Doctors sometimes draw maps of other parts of you, and your own map can become intensely interesting, but catch them trying to draw a map of a child’s mind, which is not only confused, but keeps going round all the time.
